ASC Curriculum Statement:

Holway Park ASC Centre (SEN UNIT) takes a holistic approach to teaching and learning, supporting pupils’ progress based on individual needs and abilities. We aim to provide our pupils with an engaging and empowering curriculum that meets the individual needs of the learners.

It aims to develop effective communicators, foster independence, and prepare students for well-rounded lives beyond school. Strategies for mental health, confidence, and communication skills are integrated, ensuring success in various aspects of life.

In recognition that our pupils do not learn in a linear way we have a range of flexible curriculums based on meeting individual pupil needs.

Our Early Years Curriculum creates a nurturing environment where young learners can thrive.

Our focus is on developing foundational skills, fostering independence, and promoting effective communication.

Through play-based learning, children explore their interests, build social connections, and develop essential abilities that lay the groundwork for their educational journey.

If by the end of KS1 if pupils haven’t met Early Years Foundation Stage goals they may follow our engagement curriculum.

Our Engagement Curriculum focuses on developing the student’s engagement in a range of situations and activities and developing skills while tailoring learning experiences to each child’s unique starting point. It aims to give children time and opportunities to experience the world around them. Activities within each area of learning are planned carefully using a multi-sensory approach so that children can engage in their learning journey. The focus of the areas of learning are to teach the children the skills they need to be safe, happy, healthy, and able to experience as much of the world as possible around them.

Through play-based sensory learning, children continue to explore their interests, build social connections, and develop essential abilities that lay the foundations for their future.

The Adapted National Curriculum aims to equip students with essential learning, fostering independence and confidence in everyday tasks. It empowers our students to recognise how they can use the skills they have learnt confidently and practically.

Additionally, it focuses on developing skills across various subjects, with specific attention to literacy and numeracy.

This pathway is aimed at those who can access subject specific learning. It offers a wider variety of subject content and is delivered at a higher cognitive level through delivery of discrete subjects. Although there are elements of a mainstream model, consideration is given to an adapted curriculum which reflects the whole child’s needs.

Children access work at their individual level, and where appropriate, access inclusive links in the mainstream schools; ensuring they are progressing within the national curriculum framework and continuing to make good linear progress.

Holway Park School SEN Unit

On the ASC Centre at Holway Park Primary school, you will find 4 classes. Our ASC Centre has 40 learners with a diagnosis of ASC and EHCP, who are allocated places by Somerset SEND panel. Our learners may also have significant barriers to learning, so the ASC centre offers a bespoke curriculum to endeavour to meet the variety of curriculum needs. In addition, the ASC Centre works closely with all parts of the mainstream school, to include appropriate inclusion opportunities to further enhance the provision for our learners with autism.

The ASC Centre is well equipped with a sensory based play sensory room and a Multi-Sensory Space. Learning takes place with two classrooms. In addition, there is a low stimulus work space, the channel which offers a more open plan learning area for our learners who find classroom learning challenging. The centre also has a contained outdoor learning space.

Furthermore, the ASC Centre benefits from other spaces around the mainstream school, including a larger sensory room, a school hall for indoor P.E. activities, Oasis for quiet relaxation time, woodland area, trim trails and playground and wider school fields.

Every child deserves the best possible start in life. We recognise for learners with an ASC diagnosis, there are many barriers to learning, so we aim to overcome this by observing what the children can do and supporting them to fulfil their potential and become independent learners through the provision of a balance of child initiated and adult led experiences. Through play and high quality sensory experiences, our children explore and develop learning, which help them make sense of the world.

The ASC Centre provision focuses on practical, play based, experiential learning opportunities. Within both classrooms on our centre, we are led by the child's interests.

Using a creative and innovative approach we are able to build on pupil's prior learning, experiences and existing knowledge and skills.

Learning through experiential activities with “In the moment learning approaches”, is at the heart of our practice, which is balanced with routine and structure. We have a focus on communication and work hard to develop effective communication transactional supports. We do this by following the SCERTS framework, Prizant et al, (2003) This guides us to use the appropriate transactional supports to enhance all children’s Social communication and their ability to Emotionally regulate.

Pupils have access to a range of highly engaging indoor and outdoor play opportunities throughout the day which enables the children to develop their independent, Personal Social and Emotional and play skills within the school environment.
