Outdoor Education

Intent

At Holway Park, we believe that outdoor education is an essential part of a rich, well‑rounded curriculum. Our intent is to provide meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom that spark curiosity, build resilience and teamwork and encourage children to develop a deep appreciation for the natural world.

We aim to:

  • Promote physical and emotional wellbeing through active, hands‑on experiences.
  • Inspire confidence, independence and problem-solving, enabling children to take appropriate risks in a safe environment.
  • Support holistic development, including communication, social skills, leadership and environmental responsibility.
  • Bring learning to life by using the outdoors as a powerful classroom where children can explore, enquire, and discover.
  • Ensure all pupils, regardless of ability or background, have access to enriching outdoor opportunities.

Outdoor education sits at the heart of our school culture, helping children to develop the character, pride and lifelong love of learning that prepares them for their future.

Implementation

To achieve our intent, outdoor learning is carefully planned, progressive and embedded throughout the school:

Curriculum Integration

  • Every class takes part in planned outdoor sessions throughout the year.
  • Activities focus on teamwork, exploration, creativity, physical development and wellbeing rather than formal subject outcomes.

Purposeful Outdoor Spaces

  • Our grounds include a designated area for nature exploration, outdoor reflection, science experiments, active learning and imaginative play.
  • Children are taught to respect and care for these spaces, fostering environmental stewardship.

Forest School‑Inspired Practice

  • Sessions incorporate elements of Forest School pedagogy: collaboration, problem‑solving, tool use (where appropriate), den building and nature‑based creativity.
  • Activities are adapted to different age groups, ensuring progression from EYFS through to Year 6.

Health, Wellbeing and Physical Development

  • Outdoor education supports our whole‑school commitment to wellbeing by encouraging movement, fresh air, mindfulness and positive risk-taking.
  • Pupils engage in team-building games, physical challenges, and activities that develop resilience and confidence.

Inclusivity

  • All pupils participate in outdoor learning. Tasks are adapted and scaffolded to ensure every child can succeed, including SEND learners and those who may lack confidence outdoors.

Enrichment Opportunities

  • We enhance our outdoor offer with experiences such as:
    • Outdoor adventure days
    • Gardening and ecology projects
    • Nature walks and wildlife observations
    • Residential visits (where appropriate)
  • Special theme days and cross-curricular projects encourage creativity and awe.

Safety and Skill-Building

  • Staff follow robust safety procedures while encouraging independence and exploration.
  • Children learn how to assess risk, use equipment safely, and care for themselves and others.
