 Computing Intent

At Holway, we deliver a high-quality computing curriculum that equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to live and learn safely in an increasingly digital world. Our computing curriculum fulfils the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum (2014) and places a strong emphasis on online safety, creativity with technology and developing problem-solving and logical thinking skills.

The National Curriculum for Computing aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including algorithms, decomposition, and logical reasoning

• Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing and debugging programs

• Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

At Holway, online safety is the most important aspect of our computing curriculum. Key messages around staying safe online are embedded within every computing lesson, ensuring that pupils regularly revisit and apply their understanding. In addition, pupils take part in a dedicated online safety unit during the Spring term and participate in two Internet Safety Days each year. This consistent approach ensures that children feel safe, informed and confident when accessing technology both in and out of school.

Our computing curriculum is designed as a spiral curriculum, allowing pupils to revisit key skills and knowledge across each year group, building in increasing depth and complexity. This approach enables children to draw upon prior learning, strengthening their understanding over time rather than starting anew.

Through computing, pupils develop essential skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and resilience. They are encouraged to explore, experiment and persevere, understanding that making mistakes is a vital part of the learning process. Lessons are adapted and supported through a range of resources to ensure that all pupils can access and enjoy computing, regardless of prior experience.

Computing skills are embedded across the wider curriculum, enabling pupils to apply their learning when researching, presenting work and communicating ideas in other subjects. This helps children to see computing as a meaningful and practical tool that enhances their learning across the curriculum.

Our intention is that pupils leave Holway feeling safe and confident when using technology, equipped with the resilience to tackle challenges, and curious to explore new skills in an ever-changing digital world.
